Life without Surf

It's been almost 6 months since I moved to NY. It is only now that I am feeling the effects of not being in the water or near the water, technically the last time I surfed was in November and I went to the beach in December.  Long Beach NYC, Nov 2019 I noticed I get grumpy easily and have more sad moments. I've been hacking my way out of it by being more active. I'm doing yoga and capoeira, they're helping me stay fit and I think they are helping me relieve stress.  I'm on my 4th week of yoga and I'm learning the headstand, I noticed my favorite part of the practice is when my world is altered, like being upside-down. I feel the same about capoeira, my favorite part is when we do cartwheels with a partner. I'm pretty sure I'm far from doing an elegant cartwheel, tho.  Both my teachers, Jorge S. (yoga) and Professora Missil (capoeira), are really good and friendly. I went to yoga on valentine's day and Jorge gave dark truffle chocol...

How to Organize to Make Room for Spontaneity

Going back to school after more than a year of vagabonding can be overwhelming. From being mostly carefree and going with the flow, I now have commitments and deadlines to meet. With all the requirements from school and with all the logistical necessities that comes along with living in a new city, keeping track of the things I need to accomplish can be daunting and confusing. Most times I forget the things I need to do.                                                                                   Having been in the work force for almost 8 years, the past 4 of which was very demanding...

Thoughts from the Despedida

I’m the type who needs time before things sink in. Until now I do not really feel whatever feeling people who’s about to leave their old lives behind feel, and I can think of several reasons why.  Come to think of it, my default reaction when I panic is to be in a state of chill, maybe a fake calm, another irony. Like that one time when I was about to present in front of the board and international decision makers for my old company. I was so relaxed when I couldn’t answer a very important question, which led me to a more relaxed state when it snowballed into an intense line of questioning. Moving on... I’ve been hanging out with clusters of friends the past months. Last week in La Union when my friends kept on teasing me about my love stories, Inka said it best, “logistical complexities, say no more.” So I rode on the humor and said, “what if, just because I am leaving I start liking a Filipino guy.” I underestimated the wit of fate or the matrix, thinking I’m a week...

Maybe I Should Start Regretting

One of the greatest things that happened during my year of unemployment is the uninterrupted and leisurely time I get to spend with family and friends and the shared processing of life events that came with it. The subject that always comes up – dating life! I have restrained my dating life. In the past year, I get to understand how I have wired myself in terms of heart matters. Although I try to charge on it, as I would in surf, travel, work and every other aspect of my life, dating is the aspect that I flake out on. In my attempt not to go down the path of having my life revolve around another person, I have cultivated this mindset that I will find the love of my life as long as it is hassle-free and I will only keep the love of my life as long as sacrifice isn’t required. I have overdone it. I felt that I have caught the best fish in the sea and I let them go without a fight. A good fight I would give for a wave. In surfing, I take waves on a critical, claim “MINE!...

We're Having A Baby!

Day 6 It's Cray Crew's first baby!! We're so happy for Anna! I was ecstatic as all of us were. I can only imagine how happy Anna and Mike must've been when they learned the news.  We're so excited, we've already thought of names for the baby, below are some of the suggestions: 1. Bea (yes, suggested by Bea) 2. Cray Crew 3. J Crew Eventually, the conversation lead to freezing eggs, because at this point, nobody can see marriage in our horizons just yet. We're still checking ballpark figure on how much it actually costs, although I've heard from a good friend who's a decade older (but doesn't look it, at all) that it is quite expensive. So I guess it's safe to assume that those who showed interest, eventually want to have babies. I know I do.  However, pretty recently I've been considering adopting. Largely because I'm for adopting animals. But I also want to go through those emotions of holding your baby for ...

Goodbye

Day 5 Inspired by Blue Roasts post earlier that quotes Winnie the Pooh, "how lucky i am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard." In the past months, I've been saying goodbyes, some permanent ones some, hopefully temporary. In the next few months, I'm expecting more goodbyes. The latest one would be my emancipation from my responsibilities as the mother of my washing machine babies, though I'm still in charge right now, soon the grace period will expire. My decision didn't come as a surprise to the management, as early as January, I've told my GM and my then boss that I will leave soon.  What was surprising was how I felt right after I handed my letter to my newest boss, who I've worked with in less than 2 months. After my conversation with him, I rushed to my car because I felt like crying, which I did. It felt like I just broke up with a lover.  I guess a good part of it is because I've poured my heart into i...

Doug's Fur Ball

Doug's fur ball, he's been shedding quite a lot lately... Day 4 - Shedding of skin.  Last night Inka and I talked about how we feel that we've lived several lives. Every time I dive into memory lane, it's like I'm watching a different person and I think that's awesome. One of my greatest fears is, when I'm on my deathbed and look back at how I lived my life, I would see a stagnant one, lived by a routine because it was safe. This is one of my Northern Stars as I live my day to day. In the past months, I've been shedding skin to some points when it reaches pain. But Id take them any day, I'd do everything all over again, if by some magic I met my Fairy God Mother and she grants me a rewind.  I've been reminded of the silly choices I've made, like that time when I let a French guy hop onto my motorbike or that time when I missed a flight because I was too irresponsible or that time when I made the first move, or the more ...
